Asphalt Paving Contractor in Midland, TX
Pavement is only as good as what's under it — and that part is ours.
Almost every failed parking lot in the Permian Basin failed from underneath. The mat gets blamed, but the real culprit is a subgrade that was never compacted, a base that was too thin, or water with nowhere to go. Rangefinder Excavation approaches asphalt from the dirt up, because the dirt is what decides whether the pavement lasts five years or fifteen.
We scope and manage asphalt for driveways, parking lots, commercial sites and lease roads around Midland and Odessa. We self-perform the excavation, subgrade prep, base and drainage, then bring in our paving partners to lay and roll the surface. One contractor, one number to call, and nobody pointing fingers at the other trade when something moves.

Overlay or Tear It Out: What to Do With a Failing Asphalt Lot
The decision every owner of a tired commercial lot has to make, explained by what is actually happening under the pavement rather than by what looks cheapest this year.
Read: Overlay vs Tear-OutWhat's Included
- Subgrade excavation, moisture conditioning and compaction
- Base and road base placed and compacted in lifts
- Drainage and grade set so water leaves the surface
- Asphalt paving laid and rolled by our paving partners
- Repairs, patching and overlay on failing pavement
- Parking lot, driveway, commercial site and lease road work
Why It Matters
- The subgrade, base and drainage are self-performed, not subbed
- One contractor for dirt work and paving — no split responsibility
- Repairs fix the cause underneath instead of covering it up
- Local crew that knows Permian Basin caliche and how it behaves under load
Our Process
Look at what's failing
On a repair, we find out why the pavement broke down before quoting a fix. Patching over a base that is holding water buys a season, not a decade.
Build the subgrade
We strip, shape and compact the subgrade to grade, with fall built in so water runs to an outfall instead of sitting under the mat.
Place and compact base
Base and road base go down in lifts and get compacted properly, at the depth the traffic actually calls for rather than the depth that wins a bid.
Pave and roll
Our paving partners lay and roll the asphalt over a base we built. We stay on the job through the pour and walk it with you at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you pave it yourselves?
We self-perform everything under the pavement — excavation, subgrade, base, drainage and grade — and bring in paving crews we work with regularly to lay and roll the mat. You deal with us for the whole job, and we stay on site through the pour.
My parking lot is cracking and holding water. Does it need to be repaved?
Not always. Sometimes it is a surface problem an overlay solves. Alligator cracking and areas that pond usually mean the base underneath has failed, and paving over that just hides it for a season. We will tell you which one you have before quoting.
Can you do the dirt work and the paving on the same job?
That is the whole point of scoping it this way. Site clearing, cut and fill, pad work, drainage and paving under one contract means nobody is waiting on another trade and nobody is blaming one when the other moves.
How thick should the base be under a parking lot?
It depends on the soil and what is going to drive on it — a customer lot and a yard that takes loaded trucks are not the same build. We size base depth to the actual traffic rather than to whatever makes the number look best.
